The Egyptian Center for Economic Studies received financial backing from the United States as part of a campaign to promote free-market policies in Egypt. The group was founded by Gamal Mubarak and lawyer M. Taher Helmy. Five members or directors of the think tank, not including Helmy, have been charged with corruption related to the sale of public companies, property and resources. The men all deny wrongdoing and say the deals were legal under existing laws.
